HERE - International Women's Day
On Thursday 8th March HERE (Viacom's Employee Resource Group focused on women) hosted a series of seminars, workshops and panel discussions for International Women's Day. The day started off with Morning Yoga with MTV's Beach Body SOS coach Charlotte Holmes whilst the HERE members greeted our employees with badges and leaflets on their way in to announce that Women's sanitary products are now free in the Hawley Crescent bathrooms whenever needed!
We had a packed-out room for Christina Oakley Harrington, the Founding Director of Treadwell's Book Shop who came in to talk to us about The Historical Image of the Witch and how this image has informed feminist ideas and women's sense of self in contemporary society. Our speed career networking with the female SMT sold out straight away and our employees got to ask all of their burning questions!
Over lunch we had a Women in music panel with women from MTV, Boiler Room, Wired PR and the BBC, followed by a Straight talking workshop about how to make your language more powerful.
Activist and founder of the Pink Protest Grace Campbell came in to talk to us about how to engage with millennials and the power of protest and social media. She has even inspired some of our employees to start their own campaigns!
A really interesting session that got quite a few male attendees was 'Equal Screen Time' where Blue Print Theatre Company came in to speak about the campaign ERA 50/50 and why its important to show women on screen and share women’s stories.
The day was topped off with a Funny + Female comedy event held in the Atrium. We had food, drinks and laughs and it ended the day on a high perfectly. Everybody was so engaged and so happy with the sessions. It really was an amazing International Women's Day!
